Memory Lane : Wednesday Bible Study
Led by the gentle prompting of the Holy Spirit and inspired by a desire to form an exclusive fellowship for members of the Orthodox Church, a few friends were invited by Shri Georgy Oommen to Maymadom Villa in 2004. The very first gathering took place on 21 November 2004 at 7 pm, with one clear purpose — to grow in a deeper and more intimate relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
What began as a simple initiative soon grew into a meaningful and steadfast fellowship. The group decided to meet every Saturday evening for two to three hours of Bible study, interaction, and fellowship. Since weekends often brought conflicting commitments, the meetings were later shifted to Wednesdays, giving rise to the unique identity of the “Wednesday 8 pm Bible Study Group.”
The fellowship followed a systematic study of Scripture — taking up one book of the Bible at a time until its completion before beginning another. Using this approach, almost all the books of the New Testament and several from the Old Testament were completed. There was no designated “Bible teacher”; instead, every member actively contributed, raising questions, exploring answers, and together diving deeper into God’s Word.
A typical session included:
• Singing devotional songs or hymns
• Opening prayer
• Reading of a pre-assigned Bible passage
• In-depth discussion on its meaning, relevance, and theological insights
• Personal sharing
• Closing prayer
From time to time, we were blessed by the presence of distinguished guests — theologians, missionaries, and individuals with rich experience in ministry. Among them were Dr. Rajkumar (Tamil Nadu), Late Dr. T. V. Varghese (USA), Fr. Aby Gabriel (Vayalathala), Fr. Dinu M. Daniel, Prof. P. P. Thomas, Sri Anu Thomas (Orissa missionary), Sri Chacko Mathew (Bondo Hills/Bible translation), Sri Suresh V. Mathew (UAE), Dr. Alexander George (Thrissur), Sri C. V. Jacob, Sri Biju Mathai, and many others.
The fellowship’s early regular members included M/s. C. V. Mammen, Lee T. Cherian, Mathew Chalakuzhy, Dr. Simon Easow, Moncy Chalakuzhy, T. C. Abraham, P. A. Jacob, and Georgy Oommen. Over the years, Shri Mathews Chalakuzhy stepped away due to work commitments, while Shri Mammen Varughese, Shri L. C. Cherian, and Shri Abey Jacob joined as new members. We fondly remember and deeply miss late P. A. Jacob, who was called to eternity on 30 May 2024.
Until 2010, meetings were held at Georgy’s home. Later, gatherings rotated among members’ residences. When the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown restrictions arrived, the fellowship shifted effortlessly to online platforms such as Zoom and Google Meet — a system that continues even today for its convenience, though physical meetings are arranged occasionally.
Every November, our anniversary is celebrated as a joyful family event featuring:
• Inspiring classes led by eminent theologians or counselling experts
• Sharing sessions by members and families
• Fellowship in beautiful venues
We have held anniversary gatherings at Bodhna, Tiruvalla; Maramon Retreat Centre; St. Bethseen Church, Vayalathara; Sophia Centre, Old Seminary, Kottayam; Palliative Care Centre, Perissery; Kombady Bible Institute, Tiruvalla; and more. Distinguished speakers have included Dr. K. O. John, Prof. M. C. John, Rev. Dr. T. J. Joshua, Rev. Dr. Reji Mathew, Sri Rajan (Pass It On – School of Personal Evangelism), Dr. Beena Sam, among others.
The vicars of Paliakkara Church and St. Thomas Sehion Chapel have also graced many anniversaries with messages of encouragement.
During the third anniversary, an enjoyable boat trip through the backwaters of Alappuzha sparked the idea of forming a separate ladies’ fellowship. Smt. Anu Biju Mathai graciously accepted the leadership, and meetings were held at the residence of Mrs. Anitha and Dr. Simon. Although the fellowship could not continue after their temporary relocation abroad, the initiative remains a cherished chapter in our history.
Voluntary contributions from members have supported many charitable causes over the years — including children’s education, medical treatments, house construction, and assistance to the poor and needy. Donations were also extended to orphanages, palliative care centres, and missionaries working in various regions.
So far, ₹4,00,000 has been joyfully given for charitable purposes. Sri P. A. Jacob served faithfully as treasurer for many years, and Sri Moncy Chalakuzhy now carries forward this responsibility.
With grateful hearts, we lift our thanks and praise to our Lord Jesus Christ, whose tender mercies have sustained and guided us throughout this blessed journey. We continue to seek refuge in the grace of our Savior, our Heavenly Father, and the Holy Spirit.
To God be the Glory — now and forever. Amen.
